How to Choose a Personal Trainer in Santa Monica

Paul Adent · August 12, 2026

Not every trainer is the right fit. Here are the questions worth asking before you commit to working with someone one-on-one.

Know what you want to achieve

Before you look for a trainer, get clear on your goal. Fat loss, strength, rehab after an injury, and general fitness each call for a different approach. A trainer who is great at one may not be the best fit for another.

Ask about credentials and experience

A credible personal trainer holds a recognized certification (NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or similar) and has real experience with clients like you. Ask how long they have been coaching and what kinds of clients they work with most.

Train in the right space

Where you train matters. A crowded commercial gym means waiting for equipment and a rushed session. A private studio lets you and your trainer focus entirely on your work, which is what one-on-one training is supposed to be about.

Book a consultation

The best way to know if a trainer is right for you is to meet them. A good trainer will offer a consultation to talk through your goals, assess where you are, and outline a plan before you commit.

At Phit Pro, every new client starts with a complimentary consultation. There are no classes and no memberships. You train one-on-one, by appointment, with a coach who is invested in your progress.
